Este volumen fue realizado para acompañar la exposición homónima llevada a cabo en el MOMA en 1993. A partir de ensayos críticos, la edición explora el surgimiento y desarrollo del modernismo en el arte latinoamericano del siglo XX, al establecer relaciones entre las propuestas estéticas y su contexto sociocultural. Como lo expresa Waldo Rasmussen, el entonces Director del Programa Internacional del museo, el propósito del estudio fue el de brindar un punto de vista internacionalista frente a las propuestas latinoamericanas, observando la manera en la que artistas como Tarsila do Amaral, Rufino Tamayo, Francisco Toledo y Wilfredo Lam, entre casi un centenar de otros más, asimilaron las vanguardias europeas para crear nuevos desarrollos independientes que reflejaran identidades nacionales e individuales.
